PRICES OF YOUR FAVOURITE BRANDS SLASHED! LET THE FESTIVITIES BEGIN!!

Things have not been the same for all those of us who like to relax and have a drink or two since the Maharashtra government turned party pooper! The massive hike in excise duty on liquor in the new budget of April 1, 2011 resulted in prices sky-rocketing from 25 to as much as 60 percent. A recent survey by the Times of India (ToI –September 27, 2011) shows the price of liquor in Maharashtra is TWICE as expensive as Delhi and Bangalore and THRICE that in Goa. Many have cut down drastically or have gone for another brand; others have taken to sipping juice.

Over the past few months, we have received a litany of complaints about the high liquor prices. And most of these are justified!

It has been tough going for the Press Club too with stagnant revenues and rising costs. Though we have diversified, income from the bar still accounts for more than 50 percent of our revenue.

But then the overriding consideration for the Managing Committee is to ensure that our members and their families are well looked after. So that they can once again enjoy their evenings at the Press Club without looking too hard at the bill, the Managing Committee has decided to cut prices of all brands of liquor effective October 1, 2011. This is on an experimental basis for 3 months till December 31, 2011.

The highlights:

Prices of hard liquor brands slashed by 10 to 16 percent. Mass brands like Old Monk have been reduced by 16 percent.

All Beer brands are down by 11 to 16 percent.

Wines and Breezers, that had become unaffordable, have been re-categorized as ‘soft liquor’ along with Beer and have become cheaper by as much 29 percent.

The new prices will put huge pressure on our margins and we are hoping to meet the challenge with a substantial increase in volumes.
