Congress denies Matang's homecoming

Times of India News Network (TNN) Jul 20, 2011 : NEW DELHI: Congress clarified it had not readmitted Matang Singh, who was suspended for anti-party activities 11 years ago. The disclaimer came in the backdrop of reports that the former Union minister had been taken back to the party fold after a meeting with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi along with AICC general secretary in-charge of Assam Digvijay Singh. Matang Singh not with Congress: Tewari

New Delhi, July 19 (PTI) Congress today dismissed reports of re-induction of former Parliamentary Affairs Minister Matang Singh into the party fold, saying no discussion has taken place regarding this. The party''s response came amid conflicting reports of raids by ED, IT and CBI on Matang Singh. "Matang Singh has not been inducted into Congress. I have checked it and my information is correct. To the best of my knowledge, Matang Singh has not been inducted into the Congress," party spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters here.

AICC general secretary in-charge for Assam Digvijay Singh had earlier told PTI in Guwahati on Saturday that Matang Singh had met him and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi last night in New Delhi, following which he was re-inducted. Matang was suspended from the Congress in 2000 following his "anti-party activities". Yesterday, there were unconfirmed reports of raids by investigating agencies at Singh''s residence and office. A senior party leader speaking on the condition of anonymity wondered about the veracity of the reports of raids at Matang Singh''s premises but at the same time made it clear that no decision was taken regarding the re-induction of the former Congress leader back into the party fold. He, however, did not rule out the possibility of Matang Singh making a request for re-induction and even getting some assurance regarding it from some quarters at the initial level.
